Our history is closely connected with the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE). When NAE was formed in 1942, there was an almost immediate recognition that the NAE members' mission arms were not engaged with one another in any specific way. Out of that realization, the missions committee of NAE was formed. By 1944, a missions conference was held to explore the need for a specific association of mission agencies. Out of the momentum of that conference, EFMA was formed in 1946, with fourteen charter members.

In September 2007, EFMA became The Mission Exchange.

"It is an encouragement to be a part of The Mission Exchange and know God has raised up so many organizations devoted to fulfilling the Great Commission. The diversity of size and focus of member entities enhance the value of networking and partnership in seeking to carry out our mission."
