David Mays, Director of Learning Initiatives
![]() |
On Monday, January 2, 2012, shortly before 9pm, our dear friend and colleague David Mays suffered a massive heart attack at his home outside Indianapolis and went to be with Jesus. He was the youngest and most vibrant sixty-nine year old I’ve ever met. We join his wife Marcy and their extended family in the simultaneous journey of mourning this loss and celebrating his life. Please pray with us for the continued outpouring of God’s grace in this difficult season. Both the viewing and the funeral will be at Matthews Mortuary in Brownsburg, IN (www.matthewsmortuary.com) on Saturday, January 7, 2012 (viewing at 10am and service at 2pm). Marcy has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial gifts be made to Taylor University, Legacy '64 Endowed Student Scholarship (236 West Reade Ave, Upland, IN 46989) or to The Mission Exchange (655 Village Square Dr, Suite A, Stone Mountain, GA 30083). David Mays joined the staff at The Mission Exchange as Director of Learning Initiatives in 2007, after more than twenty years as the Great Lakes Regional Director for ACMC, Advancing Churches in Missions Commitment. Before changing careers in 1983, David worked fifteen years in management for Bristol Myers. He had advanced degrees in both science and theology. We have over 100 downloadable webinars and nearly three dozen Leaders Edge Audio Extra author interviews that will carry forward David’s legacy as a life-long learner, each beginning with his inviting, energetic voice saying, “Greetings and welcome from Indianapolis, I’m David Mays…” Nearly 2,000 leaders have been blessed regularly by David’s insightful reflections through his personal Book Notes mailing list that unpacked the ideas of hundreds of authors over the years. Just hours before he died, David emailed me about an interview we were scheduled to conduct next week saying, “Wow, there are so many things we could ask…” He was giddy with excitement about the opportunity to go “under the dust cover” of another new book. In the foreword to David’slatest book, TheMission Leadership Team: Mobilizing Your Church to Touch the World, I wrote the following: I believe I could make a compelling case that David Mays has read more books, interviewed more thought leaders and facilitated more mission-focused webinars than anyone in North America (quite possibly the world) in the past thirty-six months. I stand by that assessment. In his passing we’ve lost a treasure chest of kingdom insights but gained a powerful and inspiring finishing well role model. May David’s life and legacy challenge all of us to press forward as life-long learners, hungry for God and passionate about sharing the Good News with the nations. |
